Welcome to NIU's Department of Mathematical Sciences incorporating the Division of Statistics.

On behalf of the Department and Division I want to welcome all visitors to our website. Here you will see how mathematics is a vibrant and lively science of great beauty with many ways to enhance our understanding of the world around us.

The Department contains faculty members with international reputations and offers 6 different emphases at the bachelors' level; a mathematics masters degree with 4 distinct tracks; a masters' degree in Applied Probability and Statistics offered by the Division of Statistics and a recently introduced Master of Science in Teaching degree. In addition the department offers a Ph.D. Program with current enrollment of around 30 students.

The department's programs are big enough to offer a wide variety of options yet small enough so that students are likely to be closely involved with professional faculty from the time of their arrival at Northern.
